Lands at 7.2% — Right Inside the BSP's Forecast Range, Which Is Cold Comfort When Poor Households Are Paying 9%","September inflation jumped from 6.1% to 7.2% on food, fuel and transport, and the poorest 30% of households saw prices rise faster than everyone else.","
Philippine inflation accelerated to 7.2 percent in September 2026 from 6.1 percent in August, according to the Philippine Star (Renalyn Ramirez, Oct. 6), matching April's rate as the highest in four months. Pulpulitiko's earlier forecast piece noted economists expected 6.4 to 7.4 percent; the actual reading landed inside that band, which the Star says matches the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) forecast range.

"Within forecast" is the sort of phrase that sounds like good news until you remember the target is far lower. At 7.2 percent, prices are rising at a pace that the central bank's own forecasts anticipated, and that it evidently did not prevent.

Where prices rose

Per the Star's report, food and non-alcoholic beverages climbed to 6.7 percent from 4.6 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels reached 8.4 percent from 7.9 percent; and transport hit 14.6 percent from 13.5 percent. National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa noted that "eleven out of 13 commodity groups showed upward price movement in September compared to August."

The poorest pay more

The most useful number in the release may be the least discussed: inflation for the bottom 30 percent of households was 9 percent, up from 8.2 percent in August, per the Star. A household that spends most of its income on food and transport feels a 14.6-percent transport increase and a jump in food costs far more than the headline suggests. The average hides who is actually being squeezed.

What we don't know

The reporting reviewed contained no explicit forward guidance from the BSP on whether it will respond with policy action, and no statement from the Palace or economic managers on relief measures for lower-income households. Pulpulitiko did not find one in available coverage; if officials have said anything, it was not in the sources we could access.

Context

Pulpulitiko has reported that the government suspended excise taxes on LPG and kerosene amid the energy crisis at an estimated cost of ₱700 million a month, that national debt hit a record ₱19.61 trillion as the peso weakened, and that new jeepney and bus fares took effect September 28. Each of those is now part of the backdrop to a 7.2-percent reading.

Sources

Philippine Star (Renalyn Ramirez), "Philippine inflation jumps to 7.2% in September 2026" — https://www.philstar.com/business/2026/10/06/2561305/philippine-inflation-jumps-72-september-2026

Manila Bulletin, "Inflation soars to 7.2% in September as food, fuel prices surge" (headline confirmation only) — https://mb.com.ph/2026/10/06/inflation-soars-to-72-in-september-as-food-fuel-prices-surge

","published","2026-10-06T22:07:43.9739Z","2026-10-06T22:07:43.974169Z
"0001-01-01T00:00:00Z",[92,96,100,104,108
"d17b3c34-6677-4a5f-b960-68ae07300a17","Inflation","inflation
"5ae4877f-7d5d-43b0-a204-13ccc674561c","Economy","economy
"804d7e6e-1f76-48c7-9e53-64c80410e18e","BSP","bsp
"037695bb-4c4a-4eaf-8f61-279fb886eba5","Energy Crisis","energy-crisis
"db160dd9-32fe-4d96-9f2b-0010d5dd64d2","Food Security","food-security",[113,120,134,142
"03c6d260-bef8-44b1-b0e6-5d83553698ec","september-inflation-forecast-74-percent-bsp-target-seventh-month-october-2026","Inflation Forecast to Hit Up to 7.4% — a 3.5-Year High and Seventh Straight Month Above BSP's Target, as the Central Bank 'Remains Vigilant'","Economists expect September inflation between 6.4 and 7.4 percent as typhoon-hit food supply, costlier fuel and a sliding peso compound — while the BSP's public position remains that it is watching.","2026-10-02T22:07:25.641189Z","2026-10-02T22:07:25.642142Z
"f881aa2a-58fd-4cf1-b09a-05cfa115eb40","bsp-cuts-rate-4-25-percent-flood-control-scandal-economy","BSP Cuts Key Rate to 4.25%, Its Lowest in Over Three Years, as Flood Control Scandal Continues to Weigh on Economy","BSP cuts its benchmark rate to 4.25%, a three-year low, marking its sixth straight reduction.
